WWDC10 - pebble’s predictions

The pebble.it team has a few predictions on what they expect Apple to be launching today at the opening Keynote to WWDC10:

iPhone HD/4G

Whilst the details are still largely speculative, it’s fairly certain that there will be a new phone announced today. Apple has suffered from some fairly major leaks this time round, so we’re fairly certain we’ll be seeing a new iPhone with front-facing camera; ceramic/glass back; higher-res screen and Apple’s own A4 processor.

Touchpad

A last-minute leak today suggests that Apple will be launching a new input device, drawing on the multi-touch technology found the Magic Mouse and Laptop touchpads. This could be yet another elaborate fake, but makes a lot of sense seeing as iMac users can’t currently take advantage of multi-touch features of Snow Leopard.

Apple TV

The Apple TV has been sadly neglected since its launch. Whilst a nice idea, it had some fairly major flaws that prevented it sharing the success of the iPhone or iPod, namely lack of 1080p output and walled-garden of iTunes content. It might be time for an update, or perhaps even the killing off of the device entirely.

iTunes Live

Spotify has been stealing the limelight from iTunes over the last 12 months, and probably a few customers too. The £9.99 per month offering is certainly attractive when you consider you’re getting unlimited access to a huge catalogue of music. The equivalent will buy you perhaps one chart album in Apple’s store. We expect Apple to retaliate to ensure they maintain their dominance in the online music market, with a streaming/online-based music store and subscription-based offering.

New Mac Mini

The Mac mini is due for a facelift. All of Apple’s recent hardware updates have moved towards a unibody style of manufacturing. It will be no surprise if we see a similar update to the mini, coupled with a power boost.

Software Updates

We can be fairly certain we’ll be updating our current generation iPhones with the new 4.0 software this week, and will probably see OS X 10.6.4 coming fairly soon too. We may even see Safari 5, bringing a much needed API to allow the type of extensions familiar to Firefox and Chrome users.

We’ll be watching the live blogs from 6pm GMT today. Here’s a few places where you’ll be able to catch the news as it happens:

It seems Gizmodo have been banned from the event, so we’re unlikely to see a live blog from them this year!
