New Mac Mini

A little later than anticipated, but another of our WWDC predictions has come true. Today Apple updated their store, bringing us pre-orders for the iPhone 4 as well as a brand new Mac Mini.

The most visible update to the device is it’s new unibody enclosure - machined from a single piece of aluminium, much like its Macbook Pro sibling. Looking at the rear of the case we find 4 USB ports, an SD slot and HDMI-out. Amazingly, the power supply is now built into the case, despite the Mini being even smaller than its predecessor.
What’s it for?
Thankfully, the server edition receives the same update, making this a great fit for any small office when configured as a Kerio Connect mailserver. Thanks to the tiny footprint and low power consumption, the Mini is going to be right at home in your server cabinet.
Outside of the office, we could see this becoming the heart of any Mac user’s media centre. The sleek design, 500GB hard drive and HDMI-out means the new Mac is going to be right at home when hooked up to your HDTV. Add the dual-tuner EyeTV Netstream for HD Freeview with record, rewind and pause functionality.
Environment
Apple are keen to promote the environmental & energy efficiency of their products, with the new Mac Mini drawing only 85W, and being free from toxins PVC, BFR and lead. It’s also been given the EPEAT Gold rating for measuring the ecological impact of electronic devices.
