iCal Timezone Support Problem

thatsinthebook Posted by thatsinthebook on 6th July 2010

Context. I do a lot of travel between timezones, specifically between London and Hong Kong. Since the iPad, I now very rarely take my laptop out of the office and would rarely use it to see calendar appointments on the move anyway. We use pebble.mail which is based on a Kerio mail server which has never been anything but fantastic with dealing with our mail, calendars and contacts.

Problem. When in Hong Kong, entering events in iCal makes events on iPhone, iPad and Kerio webmail appear one hour earlier. Very frustrating.

Analysis. Having searched the forums high and low there seems to still be hundreds of people having the same problem, each with their own way of describing it. Now, I am 99% sure that all my settings are correct and 100% sure that all my software is up to date. Also, when adding events to Kerio webmail, iPhone or iPad, the event appears correctly everywhere. Lastly, the problem does not arise when the UK is in GMT (Greenwich Mean Time, 25 October - 28 March), only when in BST (British Summer Time, 28 March - 25 October).

Attempts. I have tried every combination of settings under the sun, nothing fixes the problem. I have tried other Mac calendar programs, but there is always something that is missing (BusyCal, for instance, was missing CalDav and Entourage is horrible).

Rant. I like iCal and it works fantastically for everything else. Apple, you have got it right with the iPad and the iPhone and they have not been around that long! Please, for the sake of the bi-timezoning British, fix this bug.

Promise. If this also affects you, be sure to check back - as soon as a fix is available, we will let you know.
